As photographers, we get the privilege to see just a tad bit more than most, the honor of focusing on the details of a moment and the responsibility to capture it in time.

Recently, I had the humbling experience to volunteer for Night to Shine as part of their Westchester, New York, chapter. Night to Shine is an, “unforgettable prom night experience, centered on God’s love, for people with special needs ages 14 and older.” For the past five years, the Friday before Valentine’s Day is dedicated to hosting this extraordinary event all over the world. This year, it took place on February 8th, in 655 churches from around the world, to host approximately 100,00 guests.

The Westchester, New York, chapter was hosted at Ridgeway Alliance Church in collaboration with the Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of our Lady. These parishes, with the help of many community members organized an event I’ll always remember. Every detail from the guest entrance, to the glam rooms and shoeshiners,  to the DJ and dancing, was perfectly articulated.   I can’t emphasize enough how the organizing team at made each guest feel like the star that they are, with their own personal buddy, to celebrate with them on their prom night.

I was fortunate enough to assist in photographing this event and float around capturing pieces of the evening – guests walking in with a grand runway entrance, singing their heart out in the karaoke room, dressing up for the photo booth,breaking it down on the dance floor and getting crowned as the Kings and Queens they are. So often during the night, I had to stop photographing, put my camera down and take a minute to pull myself together. It’s hard to take clear photos when you’re tearing up behind the lens! The love in this room was so beautifully overwhelming and I can’t wait to share some of my favorite images with you!
